Broughton Park 32-39 Wigan
A frustrating afternoon for Park as a spirited second-half comeback fell just short against a clinical Wigan side.
The visitors struck early before Park responded immediately through a well-worked try following another dominant scrum. The sides traded scores during an entertaining opening quarter, but Wigan's ability to convert pressure into points proved decisive. While Park defended bravely and showed plenty of attacking intent, Wigan punished the few opportunities they were given to take a 25-10 lead into the break.
The message at half-time was clearly received.
Park came out for the second half with renewed energy, applying pressure from the restart and forcing Wigan onto the back foot. A powerful scrum once again laid the foundations for the opening score of the half as Park reduced the deficit and began to build momentum.
As the game wore on, Park's confidence grew. The forwards continued to dominate at the set piece, the defence remained committed, and the backs looked dangerous whenever space appeared. Despite a number of decisions failing to go their way, heads never dropped and the determination to get back into the contest was evident throughout.
The final quarter belonged largely to Park. Wave after wave of pressure had Wigan rattled as the home side battled their way back into the game, scoring 22 second-half points and giving themselves a real chance of pulling off an unlikely comeback.
Ultimately, time ran out on Park's fightback, but there were plenty of positives to take from the performance. The scrum was outstanding, the character shown throughout was immense, and the squad can take confidence from the way they finished the match.
