Broughton Park travelled to Aspull RFC for a Lancashire Trophy semi-final, knowing a place in the final was at stake.

Park started brightly and immediately looked to play in the opposition half. Their positive approach was rewarded after just five minutes when a penalty deep in Aspull territory gave them an attacking opportunity. A superb kick to touch led to an excellent lineout, and from there Park drove a powerful maul towards the line. Aspull initially held firm, but after a series of determined carries the pressure finally told, with Park's scrum-half diving over for the opening try of the afternoon.

With the wind at their backs, Aspull responded well. A difficult restart left Park defending inside their own half and, after earning a penalty advantage, the home side got themselves on the scoreboard. Moments later another attack out wide produced a try in the corner as Aspull began to build momentum.

As the half progressed, the penalty count started to hurt Park and Aspull took advantage, adding further scores during a period in which they controlled both territory and possession.

To their credit, Park finished the half strongly. Spending long periods camped inside the Aspull 22, they repeatedly tested the home defence with powerful carries and driving play. The pressure eventually forced mistakes from Aspull, including a yellow card. Sensing an opportunity, Park opted for a scrum from the resulting penalty, a straightforward decision given the dominance of their set piece throughout the half. After several relentless phases on the line, Park finally forced their way over for a superb team try.

Although trailing 22-12 at the break, Park had enjoyed plenty of possession and looked dangerous whenever they established field position. Their scrum and maul were causing Aspull significant problems and the contest was far from over.

The second half began positively when Aspull kicked directly into touch from the restart, but the hosts quickly regained control. A well-worked move out wide exposed a gap in the defensive line and allowed Aspull to extend their advantage.

That score seemed to give the home side additional confidence. Moving the ball quickly through the backs, Aspull regularly found space on the outside and continued to put pressure on the Park defence.

Park continued to battle and their scrum remained a strong platform throughout the game. However, despite forcing Aspull to spend spells in their own half, they were unable to turn pressure into points. As the game became more open, Aspull capitalised on opportunities, including a long-range try after breaking through the defensive line.

With time running out, Park struggled to regain momentum, and Aspull finished strongly with further scores to secure their place in the final.

The final score perhaps didn't fully reflect the contest. Park's scrum was dominant for large periods, their maul was effective and their attacking play created numerous opportunities. Ultimately, defensive organisation proved the difference. Once Aspull found space out wide they were able to capitalise, and Park were unable to claw their way back into the game.

Despite the disappointment of defeat, there were plenty of positives to take from the performance and much for the squad to build on moving forward.
