Broughton Park Women vs Sheffield Tigers Women
A Battle That Still Burns
Last time out, Park were right in the thick of a true top‑of‑the‑table clash, as third‑placed Broughton Park Women went toe‑to‑toe with second‑placed Sheffield Tigers Women. From the first whistle, it was clear this was always going to be a hard‑fought, evenly matched contest — and it absolutely lived up to that billing.
Torrential rain in the first half made conditions challenging, but Sheffield started with early pressure, testing Park at every opportunity. Park’s defence, though, was outstanding — organised, committed and unyielding. It took the visitors 11 minutes to finally break through for the first try.
That score lit a fire.
Park responded immediately with authority: dominant carries, fierce intent in contact, quick ball recycling and sharp, confident passing. For the next 20 minutes, both sides produced rugby of real quality — but up front, Park were immense. The scrummage was a statement, with Park clearly on top and setting the tone physically. A mid‑half shirt change saw Park switch to white jerseys after an early colour clash, but it did nothing to disrupt their momentum. Both teams crossed before the break in a terrific, finely balanced first half.
The rain eased for the second half, but the intensity did not. An early Sheffield score put Park briefly on the back foot, and the visitors capitalised on moments of turnover ball, moving it wide and using pace to stretch the defence. Despite this, Park never stopped fighting. They pressured Sheffield relentlessly, asked questions with the ball, and refused to fold.
Late on, Park powered over for another well‑deserved try — a reward for effort, belief and pride — even if the game had edged away by that point.
Let there be no doubt: the scoreboard did not reflect the performance.
Park matched one of the strongest teams in the league for long stretches and dominated key areas of the game. The attack was aggressive, the defence was brave, and the grit shown throughout spoke volumes about this squad. On another day, with a couple of moments tightened up, Park take the points.
